This was a writeup of the festival for the Beyond EM mailing list, so it includes more about the event in general than usual. It may be edited into a normal format one day. This was a bit of an unusual setup. Winfrid Trenkler (DJ of Schwingungen, once on German radio, now presented as a radio program format CD) has set up a coach trip from Germany to Sweden. It's a week long with the gig in the middle of it. About half of the people are taking a second week and heading north to catch the midnight sun The gig itself takes place on a tiny island in one of the many lakes in the area. The island is called Valö and is too small for anyone to have heard of it. It is near Kisa which is big enough to appear on a small atlas, which is in turn 30 km (guessing) south of Linköping. Or was that Norköping?
There's a small open sided wooden stage/dancefloor which faces a flat area backed by rocky shelves. The scenery is fantastic, glacial valleys covered in pine and filled with lakes. The audience was quite small, 50 people in the coach party and maybe up to another 50 locals or other independent arrivals. Electronische Maschine deny that they are a Kraftwerk rip off. There is a lot of justifcation in this: The music is clearly very influenced by them, as is their stage presence, but there are many other elements mixed in. The music was fun to listen to, and it even got quite a few people dancing. They're also top guys, who gave us loads of beer when we (on (wrong) advice from UK customs) didn't take any. The shops just sell 2.8% or 3.5% beer which was only good for pre-gig trying not to get drunk.
We were up next. We'd installed ourselves at the edge of the covered area, with the PA at the back of the dancefloor. Loud. Nice. The PA was execellent, by the way. In deference to the pretty surroundings we did some reasonably extended nice music, but the big sequences got more than their fair share. Pete especially was storming with a Nord Modular sequence which had the welly of that ol' Redshift Moog. But you can carry it under one arm :). We all had our new Nords, which we thought deserved a trip home. Got a good response from the audience, but till I can listen back at leisure I can't be sure how good it really was. But it felt good at the time, and it would be nice if it is releasable. Finally Eroc. Ex Grobscnitt Krautrocker. He set himself up right outside next to the lake. Pleasant, inoffensive music, which was not exactly to my taste but blended with the surroundings rather well. A bit too much of the ol' DAT too, as evidenced by the guitarist continuing to play after his strap broke and he caught it by the neck. Good trick if you can do it. The audience loved it anyway There was also CD music played which was by the special guest, a Swedish composer. Despite being an academic type, the music has a lot in common with Vangelis or Tomita. I'm afraid I can't remember his name but I'll find it out... I think he's well worth further investigation. He started electronic composing in the 50s (?) and was described as the Swedish Stockhausen - so the music came as a pleasant suprise | |
